The primary goal of this volume is to describe the contemporary state of affairs in Western psychotherapy, and to do so in a Whiteheadian spirit : with genuine openness to the relative ways in which creativity, beauty, truth and peace manifest themselves in various cultural traditions. To do so, it chooses to explore afresh a cross-elucidatory path that was born with the field of history of religion (and Religionwissenschaft) : what have we, and can we, learn from a dialogue with Eastern worldviews ? In order to generate meaningful contrasts between these different systems of thought, all the papers address the following core issues. On the one hand, how does the given system understand the interaction of individuality, society, and nature (or cosmos) ? Especially : what is its standpoint with regard to the nature of consciousness and with regard to the mind/body problem ? ; how far is it dualistic ? ; how are destiny and historicity assessed ? On the other hand, what is the paradigm of all mal-adjustment (or pathology) and what is its typical tuning-in (or curative) pattern ? What are furthermore the ins and outs of the diagnostic and therapeutic assessments involved ? Wherever possible, some (meta)theoretical and clinical issues are addressed from the vantage point of selected material from abnormal psychology or psychiatry.

William James's moral philosophy is neither a remaking of utilitarianism nor it is a theory of values as it is assumed by the majority of his interpreters. Instead James offers an ethical view consistently arising out of valorization of energy of his days, and effecting a counter-tendency to the two great popular scientific currents of the 19th century : the universalizing of Darwinism and the pessimistic ideologies of social entropy. James's ethics moves away from the traditional idealistic or utilitarian grounds and takes place against the background of an up-and-coming philosophical anthropology hinged on the primacy of action. Human activity, however, needs to be understood in relation to Energy as the fabric of the universe pervading the whole spectrum of being in a continuum in which humanity and divinty are strictly intertwined.
Ethics of energy means an ethics that organizes energy, as well as an ethics that stems out of energy. This constitutive ambiguity of the genitive cannot be resolved but rather needs to be fully affirmed as the leading symptom of the ontological situation out of which such an ethics originates. The ethics James so coarsely outlined is intended to be used to organize energy, precisely because what is at stake in it is the energetic and active nature of the human being as the indeterminate being. Our need, our will and capability to organize energy occurs precisely because energy is the very texture of being.
Sergio Franzese is Ph.D. in Philosophy and Assistant Professor of History of Philosophy at the Dept. of Social Science and Communication at Università del Salento (Lecce – Italy). He is the author of L'uomo indeterminato. Saggio su William James (Roma : D'Anselmi, 2000), the editor of Nietzsche e l'America (Pisa : ETS, 2005) and the co-editor of Fringes of Religious Experience (Frankfurt a. M. : Ontos Verlag, 2007).

This book is a joint effort of like-minded researchers to define the concept of process within a psychological setting. Although minor differences exist as regards choice of background theory, their common focus is on personality in a broad psychodynamic context. In the parlance of modern Japanese philosophy, the term Basho denotes a field of experience underlying all conceptions of reality, while remaining itself conceptually ungraspable. The Basho of Economics, then, refers to the economy's hidden experiential ground, which has never been explicitly scrutinized, as such, by mainstream economics. We uncover this ground by discerning the tacit presuppositions of classical and neo-classical theories from the perspective of modern Japanese philosophy. In particular, we draw attention to the traditional atomist assumptions implicit in their equilibrium-centered models. By breaking through these assumptions, we reconstruct the economy as a functional and relational world of habitual and creative activity outside of the scope of mechanical laws.
Silja Graupe is the leading figure in the new disciplinary field of intercultural economics, defined as the critique and reformulation of the foundations of economics in the light of the world's philosophical and ethical traditions. She studied engineering and economics at the Technical University of Berlin, and in 2005 received her doctoral degree in economics from the same university. Her interest in Japanese philosophy dates back to her studies at Tokyo's Sophia University in 1999. Her publications include “Japanese Modes of Business Behavior” (2002), “The Locus of Science and its Place in Japanese Culture” (2006) and “Do Daoist Principles Justify Laissez Faire Policies ?” (2007). She is currently working on redefining the role of knowledge and innovation in the economy, as they have been modeled in neo-classical economics, from the perspective of Japanese management and process philosophy.
